RETROSPEKTIVE
- 10 Jahre phanTECHNIKUM
During my first year at the Technisches Landesmuseum Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the museum marked its 10-year anniversary — an important moment to reflect on its identity and future direction.
Together with the director, Michael Rahnfeld, I initiated and co-developed a special exhibition, conceived and realised largely in-house. The process involved revisiting the collection, identifying key narratives, and translating them into a coherent and engaging exhibition format.
The project required intensive collaboration, long production phases, and a high degree of flexibility — balancing conceptual work with practical execution under tight conditions.
What made the experience particularly meaningful was the direct response of visitors: observing how people engaged with the exhibition, connected with its themes, and actively participated in the space we had created.
AUF ZWEI RÄDERN
At the Technisches Landesmuseum Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, we collaborated with a private collector to present a unique collection of historical bicycles.
Building on this material, the exhibition explored the evolution of the bicycle while grounding it in a regional perspective. Rather than presenting a purely technical history, the project highlighted how mobility, design, and everyday life developed in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern — connecting objects with local context and lived experience.
The exhibition was conceived and realised in close collaboration with the collector and a wonderful Designer (shoutout to Sarah:), combining curatorial research, storytelling, and spatial design. Particular emphasis was placed on translating specialised knowledge into an accessible and engaging narrative.
The project also reflected the broader approach of the museum at the time: using strong individual collections to create thematic entry points that resonate with diverse audiences and invite deeper engagement with technological and cultural history.
INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
During my time at Technisches Landesmuseum Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, my work extended far beyond individual projects and evolved into a broader process of institutional development.
Together with the director, Michael Rahnfeld, we worked across multiple areas — from the relaunch of the museum’s website to the redesign of exhibition spaces and the museum shop, as well as the conception and execution of large-scale public events, including the museum’s oldtimer rally.
The work was shaped by a challenging starting point and required navigating structural constraints, limited digital infrastructure, and institutional resistance. At the same time, it opened up space for rethinking communication, audience engagement, and the role of the museum within its regional context.
Over time, our efforts contributed to a significant increase in visibility and visitor engagement, culminating in the most successful year in terms of attendance since the museum’s opening.
The experience offered me valuable insights into leadership, public-sector dynamics, and the realities of driving change within established institutions — often under pressure, but with a clear sense of direction and shared ambition.
